Well, the hurricane reconnaissance aircraft found flight level winds of 54 knots, and a drop of the central pressure by 5
mb over a one and a half hour period...thus we have Tropical Storm Edouard. Intense convection has increased over the center of circulation, indicating the system is actually rapidly getting its act together. With this quick intensification, it looks more likely that this system could approach hurricane strength. However, the low tropical cyclone heat content in the northern gulf should hold it back from a 'rapid intensification' phase, where the storm bombs out dropping pressure by 15 or more
mb in a few hours.
